About
Urban Bazaar will host the Vagabond Indie Craft Fair on Saturday & Sunday, May 5th & 6th, 2012, from noon to 7pm. The event, which includes more than two dozen talented local artists and craftspeople selling their work over 2 days (different vendors each day!), will take place in the back garden of the store at 1371 9th Ave, San Francisco.
Recently named “Best Place in SF for Homemade, Home-grown, and Locally Sourced” by Airbnb, Urban Bazaar is excited to bring an even greater selection of handmade goodies- and the artists who make the goods- into their backyard garden for their 5th local artist craft fair. The merchandise offered at Vagabond will include all manner of gifts, with a focus on jewelry, accessories, and affordable artwork- all of which make great Mother’s Day gifts. The weekend also boasts a number of freebies- like free sewing demonstrations by Nicole Blum & Debra Immergut, authors of “Improv Sewing,” on Sunday; free button making all weekend; free mini life-coaching sessions by The Creative Giraffe on Saturday; a fundraiser bake sale for a local high school art mural program all weekend; and tasty beverages while you shop.
“We chose the name ‘Vagabond’ for this show to represent the gypsy-like nature of the local art scene. There are more and more independent craftspeople making a living traveling from place to place and selling their wares in the Bay Area these days,” says co-owner of Urban Bazaar, Brandi Chalker. “The people who support local art and shop at these events are vagabond-esque too. They’re escaping from our cookie cutter, factory-made consumer culture, and instead are embracing the handcrafted culture of indie artists in the Bay Area.”
“Seeing the success of our past craft fairs brings us a lot of hope for the local art scene. Even when the economy is down, a lot of people are still going out of their way to find really unique handmade gifts for their friends and family, and choosing to support local talent instead of faceless, big-box corporations,” says co-owner Briana Bers. “We’re excited to witness this kind of community again at the upcoming Vagabond… and to get our hands on some amazing goods, too.”
