Taxidermy Couture is a memento mori inspired Jewelry & Art line by Native San Francisco based artist Marya Zoya .
Memento mori is a latin phrase translated as “Remember you must one day die”. It names a genre of Artistic creations that vary widely from one another, but which all share the same purpose: to remind people of their own mortality & the punishment they supposedly will receive if they transgress the rules of their religion. A phrase that has a tradition in art that dates back to Antiquity. Drawn towards mediums such as animal skulls, vertebrae, teeth, and vintage up-cycled Fur. No animals are killed for the sake of her Art. Using only materials from dealers that have been found in the wild or have been hunted for meat or overpopulation.
“I don’t think any part of an animal should be wasted. Animals give us the gift of food and warmth. To me the bones & teeth are just as precious. They should be respected & admired.” -Marya.
A large portion of her work is one of a kind and considered to be wearable art pieces.
